Healthcare DSPs vs Generalists: The Honest Comparison

Two specialists, seven generalists, one question: does your healthcare campaign really need a healthcare DSP?

Short verdict

Healthcare DSP

Take the specialist seat when the budget sits in the US.

  • US campaigns with HCP focus and NPI-based audiences.
  • Rx evidence through US measurement partners is part of the plan.
  • Managed service and US contract logic are budgeted for.

General DSP

Take the generalist as soon as DACH is in the plan.

  • DACH reach through contextual and care-area signals.
  • Self-serve access with log-level export instead of managed-only.
  • Measurement through area holdouts rather than person-level chains.

Mixed plans separate the data paths per market instead of bending one seat to cover both. Article 9 GDPR rules out person-level health segments in the EU regardless. Assessment as of 6 July 2026.

What the specialists can do

DeepIntent and PulsePoint wire programmatic buying into US health data: NPI-based HCP lists, patient modeling, Rx measurement via partners. In the US market that is a real edge. Both platforms say little else themselves.

Where the edge ends

At the EEA border. Both data models lack a lawful foundation in DACH, and Article 9 GDPR rules out person-level health segments anyway. For DACH campaigns, general DSPs with contextual and area signals simply deliver more: reach, cost control, measurability.

The decision rule

US budget with HCP focus: assess the specialist seat, plan a measurement partner. DACH budget: The Trade Desk or Adform with care-area segments, measured through area holdouts. Mixed plans separate the data paths strictly per market.

More from this cluster

  • Q01
Do healthcare campaigns need a specialist DSP?

In the US often yes, in DACH no. DeepIntent and PulsePoint rest on US health data with no local counterpart. For DACH budgets, general DSPs with contextual and area signals deliver more reach, better cost control and more defensible measurement.

  • Q02
Can person-level health segments be used in the EU?

For advertising delivery, effectively no. Article 9 GDPR treats health data as a special category with narrow exemptions that a marketplace segment does not meet. The viable route runs through context and area signals without personal reference. Legal review per campaign stays mandatory.
